How does the apprenticeship program work?

  • 5 year apprenticeship
  • 1-2 nights of in-the-classroom training per week (3 – 15 week segments per year)
  • Work during the day and get paid (Must obtain 1,500-2,000 on-the-job hours per year) 
  • Complete general education classes through Washtenaw Community College to earn an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences
  • Graduate with a journeyman card and certificate of completion from the United Association and United States Department of Labor

How can I apply for the program?

The application process will open Tuesday, January 2, 2024 and close on Friday, January 26, 2024.  There are two (2) options to apply.  You can apply, in-person, at the Training Center, during normal business hours (see below).  The second option is applying on-line.  The link will be in the upper right of this page and on the home page.

If you do not have access to a computer to fill out the application, you can do so in-person at the Training Center, during normal business hours (see below).  We will make available a computer, tablet or paper copy of the application available to you to complete.

There is a $50 testing fee that must be paid by February 2, 2024 to be scheduled for your examination.  CREDIT/DEBIT or Check only.  NO CASH.  We must also make a copy of your valid driver's license when you pay.

Basic qualifications to apply:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.  (May be 17 at time of application, examination, interview and ranking, provided all other qualifications are met.  May NOT be placed into work force until turning 18.)
  • Applicants must have high school transcripts, G.E.D., or college transcripts
  • Proof of citizenship (S.S. card, passport, etc.)
  • Applicants must have a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license
  • Applicants must be a resident of Washtenaw County, the townships of Green Oak or Hamburg in Livingston County, or the townships of Clinton, Tecumseh or Macon in Lenawee County.
  • Applications will only be available at the Training Center or on-line, when the application process is open.

If you have had an interview between March 2022 to March 2023, would like to keep your previous test score, and be considered for the next apprenticeship class, please contact the Training Center to be scheduled for the next round of interviews, once applications open up.

All others should re-apply.

  • The test will cover Applied math, Workplace Documents, Workplace Observation, and Applied Technology.

    • Select Workforce at the top of the page
    • Scroll down and select WorkKeys Assessments
    • Listed under WorkKeys Assessments Validate Competencies are the links to each test subject.
